Bernard O'Phelan, a young Irishman who came to France to work in the wine business, married the daughter of a Bordeaux merchant and in 1810 bought two estates, including Ségur de Cabanac, the future Château Phélan- Ségur. Shortly before his death in 1841, Bernard built a Palladian-style residence on a small hill whose gentle slope ends in the Saint-Estèphe estuary. The panorama is sublime and soothing and the constructions are simple and utilitarian. He unexpectedly installs the vat house and the wine storehouses inside the house in an astonishing architectural ensemble. Château Ségur is passed on to his son, Frank, whose Irish roots bring him into the circle of the Bordeaux families Barton, Johnston, Lynch etc... However, Frank Phelan feels deeply Médoc and will be the mayor of Saint-Estèphe for many years. He will be a demanding owner, bringing the quality of Phélan-Ségur wines to the highest level and allowing them to reach an international fame.
The colour is purplish and the nose gives off powerful aromas of red and black fruits (blackberries and strawberries). On the palate, the tannins are silky and the sweetness of spices, such as cinnamon, brings a natural lightness and freshness. A beautiful length on the palate and the powerful structure of Château Phélan-Ségur makes it one of the precious and distinguished wines of the Médoc coast.
Grapes varities: 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.
